Radioactive Acropora tortuosa is a standout SPS coral, famous for its neon green base and glowing tips. It’s not the easiest acro, but with stable conditions and a bit of patience, it can become a showpiece in your reef.
Ideal Placement & Lighting
This coral thrives under strong, stable lighting and good flow. Rushing it into high PAR is the fastest way to bleach it, so think gradual changes.
- Lighting: Aim for 250–350 PAR under quality LEDs, T5s, or metal halides.
- Acclimation: Start it mid-level and raise the intensity over 2–3 weeks.
- Flow: Strong, random, indirect flow that keeps polyps moving but doesn’t blast tissue.
- Placement tip: Mount it on a stable plug or small rock island so you can move it if needed.
Water Parameters & Daily Care
Radioactive Acropora tortuosa rewards consistency more than perfection. Sudden swings cause paling, burnt tips, or tissue loss.
- Alkalinity: 8.0–9.0 dKH, with less than 0.3 dKH change per day.
- Calcium: 420–460 ppm; Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm.
- Nutrients: Nitrate 5–15 ppm, phosphate 0.03–0.08 ppm to keep color rich.
- Dosing: Use a doser for alk and calcium; test 2–3 times weekly until consumption is predictable.
Feeding, Pests & Color
While Acropora get most of their energy from light, light feeding helps growth and color.
- Target feed a fine coral food 1–2 times per week with pumps off for 15–20 minutes.
- Inspect weekly for Acropora-eating flatworms and red bugs; dip new frags before adding.
- Keep your glass and lenses clean—this coral’s “radioactive” glow really pops under blue-heavy lighting.
If polyp extension suddenly disappears, check alkalinity, temperature, and for pests before changing lighting or flow.
