Oregon Blue Tort Acropora

The Oregon Blue Tort Acropora is a legendary SPS coral. Its deep electric blue branches stand out in any reef. With the right care, this coral can become a true showpiece.

Understanding Oregon Blue Tort Requirements

This coral demands strong, stable conditions. It is not a beginner SPS. Aim for a mature tank that has been running at least eight to twelve months. Stable parameters matter more than chasing perfect numbers.

Keep alkalinity between 8–9 dKH. Hold calcium around 420–450 ppm. Maintain magnesium near 1300–1400 ppm. Test these at least twice per week at first. Adjust slowly if you see swings. Rapid changes will stress the coral and dull the color.

Oregon Blue Tort prefers high light. Target 250–350 PAR at the coral tips. Use a PAR meter if possible. Place frags high on the rockwork under strong LEDs, T5s, or hybrids. Acclimate slowly by starting lower, then raising the frag or increasing intensity over two to three weeks.

Flow should be strong and random. Provide enough movement so polyps sway constantly but do not blast the tissue. Use two or more wavemakers on alternating or random modes. Avoid direct, constant flow from a single powerhead. This can cause tissue recession on the facing side.

  • Temperature: 77–79°F (25–26°C)
  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026 specific gravity
  • Nitrate: 2–10 ppm, Phosphate: 0.03–0.08 ppm

Placement, Feeding, and Troubleshooting Color

Start new Oregon Blue Tort frags on a stable rock shelf. Give at least 3–4 inches of space from other SPS. This coral can grow thick branches. Plan for future growth so it does not shade or sting neighbors.

Feed the tank rather than target feeding this Acropora. Provide a mix of fine particle foods and quality frozen foods for fish. Healthy fish produce waste that feeds the coral indirectly. Dose amino acids two to three times per week if nutrients are very low. Turn off skimmers for 30–60 minutes after dosing.

  • Keep nutrients low but not zero to maintain deep blue color.
  • Use a consistent lighting schedule, 9–10 hours of full intensity.
  • Perform 10–15% water changes every two weeks.

Watch for color shifts as an early warning. If the coral turns pale, check PAR and nutrients. Too much light with ultra-low nutrients often causes paling. Lower PAR by 20–30% and slightly raise nitrate and phosphate. If it browns out, nutrients may be too high or flow too low. Improve export with more frequent water changes and stronger, more random flow.

Common mistakes include moving the coral too often, changing salt brands suddenly, and chasing numbers with large dosing swings. Make one change at a time and wait a week before adjusting again. With patience, stable parameters, and strong light, your Oregon Blue Tort can develop that famous, rich sapphire color that reef keepers love.

  • Quarantine new frags for pests like AEFW and red bugs.
  • Dip all incoming SPS using a trusted coral dip.
  • Inspect bases and plugs with a magnifying glass or macro lens.
