Montipora Setosa: Care Guide for This Glowing SPS Coral
Montipora Setosa is a stunning SPS coral prized for its intense orange to pink coloration and smooth, contoured growth. It’s an excellent choice for reef keepers who want a standout showpiece without the extreme difficulty of some other small-polyp stony corals. In this guide, we’ll cover care, placement, and growth tips to help your Montipora Setosa thrive.
Montipora Setosa Basics
Montipora Setosa is a branching/encrusting SPS coral from the Indo-Pacific. In home aquariums it tends to form chunky, finger-like branches with a glossy, almost porcelain surface. Polyps are small and often barely visible, which helps highlight its bold coloration.
- Scientific name: Montipora sp. (Setosa variety)
- Difficulty: Moderate SPS
- Growth form: Branching and encrusting
- Temperament: Generally peaceful, mild sweeper potential
Tip: Start Montipora Setosa in a stable, established reef system. It dislikes big parameter swings far more than slightly less-than-perfect numbers.
Lighting, Flow, and Placement
Getting light and flow right is the key to keeping Montipora Setosa colorful and healthy. While it’s photosynthetic and loves strong light, it can bleach if moved too quickly into high PAR.
Lighting Requirements
- PAR range: 150–250 PAR for most tanks
- Lighting type: LED, T5, or hybrid systems all work well
- Acclimation: Start lower and raise intensity over 2–3 weeks
If you’re still dialing in your lighting, our guide on best lighting for SPS corals offers detailed PAR targets and spectrum tips.
Flow and Placement
- Flow: Moderate to strong, random flow patterns
- Placement: Mid to upper rockwork, away from aggressive LPS
- Avoid: Direct, laminar blasts that strip tissue
Montipora Setosa does well on a stable rock ledge where it can both encrust and send up new branches. Leave room around it; once happy, it can expand quickly.
Water Parameters and Feeding
Like most SPS, Montipora Setosa demands stability more than ultra-low nutrients. Aim for consistent parameters and avoid large swings in alkalinity.
- Temperature: 24–26°C (75–78°F)
- Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
- Alkalinity: 8–9.5 dKH
- Calcium: 420–460 ppm
- Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
- Nitrates: 5–15 ppm
- Phosphate: 0.03–0.08 ppm
Montipora Setosa relies mainly on light, but benefits from a lightly fed reef:
- Maintain low–moderate nutrients instead of chasing zero
- Broadcast feed fine particle foods 1–2 times per week
- Use amino acid supplements sparingly in well-skimmed systems

Common Problems and Quick Troubleshooting
- Pale or bleaching tissue: Too much light too fast or sudden parameter change. Lower PAR and stabilize alkalinity.
- Brown, dull color: Excess nutrients or very low flow. Improve export and increase random flow.
- Tissue recession from the base: Check for pests, unstable alkalinity, or shading from faster-growing corals.
With stable water, careful light acclimation, and good flow, Montipora Setosa can become one of the brightest centerpieces in your reef. For more coral care articles, browse our SPS coral care guides section.
