JF Grafted Sun Montipora Capricornis

JF Grafted Sun Montipora capricornis is a standout SPS coral. It shows bright orange plates with green grafted streaks. In the right conditions, it grows into stunning, layered shelves that become a true centerpiece.

Understanding and Placing Your JF Grafted Sun Monti

This coral is a plating Montipora. It grows outward in flat, whorled layers. Plan space for future growth. A small frag can double in size within six to eight months in a strong SPS system.

Place it in the upper half of the tank. Aim for 200–350 PAR. Many hobbyists see the best color around 250–300 PAR. Start the frag lower and move it up over two to three weeks. This prevents light shock and tissue bleaching.

Provide strong, indirect flow. You want the polyps to sway, not blast sideways. A good rule is to place it where a piece of flake food would move briskly but not spin. Avoid dead spots under the plates. Trapped detritus can cause tissue recession on the undersides.

  • Target PAR: 250–300 for best color and growth.
  • Flow: strong, random, indirect from at least two directions.
  • Mount on a stable rock ledge with room to plate outward.

Use reef-safe super glue gel on a clean, dry plug or rock edge. Hold the frag in place for 20–30 seconds. Then gently adjust your flow so it does not topple. Check the frag after the lights out period to ensure it has not shifted.

Water Parameters, Color, and Long-Term Care

JF Grafted Sun Monti needs stable SPS-level parameters. Keep alkalinity between 8.0–9.0 dKH. Calcium should stay near 420–450 ppm. Magnesium works well around 1300–1400 ppm. Test at least twice weekly in young systems and adjust dosing slowly.

Nutrients should not be zero. Aim for nitrate between 5–15 ppm and phosphate 0.03–0.08 ppm. Ultra-low nutrients often cause pale, washed-out plates. Slightly elevated nutrients usually deepen the orange and help the green grafts stand out.

  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026 specific gravity.
  • Temperature: 77–79°F (25–26°C) with minimal daily swing.
  • Alkalinity changes: no more than 0.3 dKH per day.

Feed your tank, not the coral directly. This Montipora mainly relies on light and dissolved nutrients. A balanced schedule might include amino acid dosing two to three times per week. Offer fine particulate foods, like reef roids, once weekly. Turn off the return pump for 10–15 minutes when feeding.

Watch for common issues. Fading color usually means too much light or too little nutrients. Try lowering PAR by 50–75 and raising nitrates slightly. Edge recession or white patches often point to unstable alkalinity or pests. Inspect at night for nudibranchs and check for bite marks along the rim.

  • Quarantine new SPS frags for 4–6 weeks when possible.
  • Dip new pieces using a coral dip according to label directions.
  • Keep at least 3–4 inches distance from aggressive LPS with long sweepers.

With patience and stable parameters, your JF Grafted Sun Montipora can form layered plates that shade lower rockwork. Plan its growth path early. Trim outer edges with bone cutters if it crowds neighbors. Mount the cut frags on new plugs and you will soon have backup colonies or trade pieces for your local reef community.
