Why Green Florida Ricordia Belongs in Your Reef
Green Florida Ricordia (Ricordea florida) is a hardy, colorful mushroom coral that’s perfect for both beginners and experienced reef keepers. Its neon green bubbles glow under blue lighting and add instant pop to any aquascape.
These corals are generally peaceful and don’t send out long sweeper tentacles, making them great for mixed reefs. They grow slowly into small clusters, so you can tuck them into gaps in your rockwork without worrying about them taking over.
- Placement: Low to mid rockwork, away from aggressive stinging corals.
- Lighting: Low to moderate; they color up best under strong blue spectrum.
- Flow: Low to moderate, just enough to gently move their bubbles.
Care Tips for Vibrant Color and Growth
Stable parameters are more important than chasing exact numbers, but aim for:
- Temperature: 76–79°F (24–26°C)
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026
- Alkalinity: 8–9.5 dKH
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Ricordia can live on fish waste and light alone, but targeted feeding boosts growth and color.
Hobbyist tip: Turn off your pumps and gently place tiny bits of mysis, enriched brine, or reef roids directly on the mouth once or twice a week.
When introducing a new Green Florida Ricordia:
- Start it in a shaded, low-flow area for a few days, then slowly move it brighter if desired.
- Watch for signs of stress—shriveling, gaping mouth, or bleaching—and reduce light or flow if you see them.
- Secure loose polyps with a small cup of rubble in low flow until they attach.
With gentle flow, moderate light, and occasional feeding, your Green Florida Ricordia will become a glowing focal point in your reef.
