The CB Maleficent Acropora is a striking SPS coral prized for its bold coloration and branching growth. It can be a showpiece in an established reef, but it does demand stable, high-quality conditions. Here’s how to keep it thriving.
Placement, Flow, and Lighting
CB Maleficent does best in mature systems (8–12+ months old) with consistent parameters.
- Placement: Mid to upper rockwork, where it can receive strong, indirect flow and high light.
- Flow: Aim for random, turbulent flow. Avoid a direct powerhead blast on the colony; point pumps past or above it.
- Lighting: PAR in the 275–375 range is a good target. Acclimate slowly by starting lower and increasing intensity over 2–3 weeks.
Tip: Watch polyp extension. If polyps stay tight and tissue looks dull, reduce light or flow slightly and re-evaluate over a few days.
Water Parameters and Day-to-Day Care
Consistency is more important than chasing perfect numbers. Keep parameters stable and changes gradual.
- Alkalinity: 8.0–9.0 dKH, with less than 0.2 dKH swing per day.
- Calcium: 420–450 ppm; Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm.
- Nutrients: Nitrate 5–15 ppm, phosphate 0.03–0.08 ppm. Avoid “zeroed out” nutrients.
- Dosing: Use a reliable 2-part or calcium reactor and test alk at least 2–3 times per week.
Feeding and Color Management
- Feed the tank small particle foods (reef roids, fine zooplankton) 1–2x per week with pumps on low.
- Keep moderate nutrients to support rich coloration; too low and Maleficent can pale out.
- Frag carefully using bone cutters and remount in similar light/flow to avoid shock.
With stable parameters, thoughtful placement, and moderate nutrients, CB Maleficent Acropora can become one of the most dramatic centerpieces in your reef.
